I suppose the only way to tell for sure, unless you can get a factory representative to definitively say, is to load a few rounds with exactly the same powder charge, case, bullet, and regular primer and fire them over a chronograph and average the FPS. Now, with this revelation from Remington, I'm not so sure if that is generally true or not. Again, is the difference in power or hardness, or both?Ī couple of weeks ago I would have said magnum primers are hotter and thought nothing more about it. Maybe difference in power, maybe in cup hardness, or maybe both? Federal, just like CCI, makes both regular and magnum small pistol primers and regular and magnum large pistol primers. Same with CCI large pistol and large magnum pistol primers. I do not know if this difference is in primer composition strength or cup hardness, or both. I'm guessing this is what Remington is also doing with their large primers, but they do not label them as such like Winchester does.įederal offers in small pistol primers both regular and magnum and are labeled as such. I know that while Winchester does offer both regular and magnum small pistol primers, they only offer one product for large pistol primers and it is labeled for both regular and magnum loads. I do not know if this is also the case with others such as CCI, Winchester, Federal, etc. I do not believe that Remington offers a particular magnum rated large pistol primer, just large. The only difference, per Remington, is their magnum primers have a harder cup to prevent possible blow-outs due to increased magnum pressures. I have recently discovered that in the case of Remington small pistol primers the only difference in the regular (Remington size 1 1/2) and what they sell for small pistol magnums (Remington size 5 1/2) has the same amount and composition of priming compound. I have very recently come to question that, at least in some cases. I have always been told that magnum primers are hotter, hence they being magnums. I have never actually compared loads with magnum to regular primers before.
